	Clinician Education Task Group Members include: Teresa Brown, New Hampshire (task group leader) Mary Aquilino, Iowa Esther Baker, Iowa Diane Bartscherer, New York Denise Jolicoeur, Massachusetts Karyn Madore, New Hampshire Ellen Prior, New Hampshire Julie Zaykoski, New York Task Group Description: Research shows that clinicians do not consistently adhere to the PHS Guideline and feel inadequately prepared to intervene with patients who smoke. Significant barriers interfere with clinician assessment and treatment of tobacco use, including lack of knowledge about effective interventions and pharmacotherapy, inadequate organizational supports, low or no reimbursement, and limited training. The Clinician Education task group identified three areas for future action. Recommended Actions: Support the inclusion of evidence-based intervention education in nursing or medical schools as well as in professional certification and licensing standards. This could involve working with Deans of higher education programs, testing agencies, and licensing boards. One limitation is the feasibility of working with numerous credentialing and licensing bodies and differing state standards. Collaborate with organizations to influence regulatory agencies (e.g., JCAHO) to require, at a minimum, universal tobacco use interventions within inpatient and outpatient units and referral to evidence-based treatment. Make existing evidence-based curricula, learning opportunities, and other resources more visible and accessible. The Collaborative can help disseminate these resources by functioning as a clearinghouse for information and creating a web-based catalog of educational resources.
